This felllow goes from place to place setting up traps wherever his sick sense of humor tells him to.

A typical Mad Trapper Trap is a rope snare set in front of some strange looking marks. When the victim is swinging upside down, it realizes the runes were simply "M. T. gotcha!" upside down.

He has an augmented spider monkey familiar named Agnew which wears a ring of invisibility. At times he pretends Agnew is an Unseen Servant (see spell).

If a party of adventurers particularly annoys him or strikes him as funny, he will follow for a week or so, laying snares all aroung their camp as they sleep. If they are in town, he will do all sorts of cliche tricks, like buckets of water (or maple syrup) over doorways, etc.

How plastic gets from Earth to Zam

Since plastic is magic immune, one might expect never to see plastic on Zam, right? Not so; There are other ways.

One very expensive method is to, in effect, physically go around the walls between the paths the two worlds are taking.

Mail

Service

For all settled lands except Molokai, mail delivery is relatively dependable. The relevant bribes to the Thieves' Guilds are maintained dutifully by the Postal Guild. The Postal Guild recruits members from the local population, and except for the higher-ups in the hierarchy, most mailbeings have never been away from their native environs.

McGavin's Tavern

Karnak

Owned by:

Smallon

The original McGavin is long gone, however his "authentic" Irish coffee lives on. A sign above the bar reads "Extreme rowdiness will lead to disenchantment." Smallon, the head barkeep, has a Ring of Disenchantment with several hundred charges. This was presented to McGavin four centuries back in response to his complaint that it was impossible to survive the drunk magician clientele.

Also called "Manic Menlo," due to his idiosyncracies. He moves about his shop in an unnervingly flighty manner and talks constantly, addressing the inanimate bust Arturo all the while. "Oooh! A ring! What do you think of THAT, Arturo? Test it? Oh, yes, let's!"

Midwood Hall

Eaderoter Forest

Owned by:

Barney Burrows

Staff:

Brenda Burrows

An inn set on the north side of the Finagle to Toenuckle road in the midpoint of its path through the forest, this serves as the central social point for the forest. Its proprietor is Barney Burrows, and the Hall has been in the Burrows family since its construction 800 years ago. He, his wife, five children and ten other relatives perform all the work in the Hall itself and the surrounding small settlement. The Hall offers sleeping quarters for humans as well as short people. The Burrowses live in two wings of their own. In deference to the high number of druids in the area, the menu is vegetarian and notorious. The supply of beer, ale, stout, mead, wine and spirits is of high quality, impressive variety, and rumored to be endless. Above the bar in the Common Room is a collection of bottles including at least one of every brand in Zam at the time, as well as three ancient Lone Star longnecks in a glass case with a plaque with translations of the labels.

The normal evening's crowd in the Common Room may consist of several human and halfling merchants, a druid or two looking for news from afar, some half-elven thief-acrobats juggling and doing coin tricks for drinks, an experienced ranger trying to keep his/her distance from a group of young first and second level rangers taking a break from their training, and several Burrowses listening to any stories being told.

Every Thursday night is Tall Tales Night, but a party of travellers might not realize this at the time. Also, anyone who tells a truly funny, original Vergaantz joke will get free food and drink for the night.

The Common Room on a typical afternoon

Entering through the human-sized door, the visitor is at one end of a large common room. Off at the other end is that twenty foot tall door I mentioned. Near it is a chair whose seat is six feet off the ground, facing a nine foot tall table. A balcony to the right of it holds tables for normal-sized folk to chat with the giant, when there's a giant there.

Which there isn't, at the moment. When full, the room holds sixty or seventy, but it isn't and it doesn't.

The big door has multicolored windows in it, as does the wall surrounding it, so the afternoon sun's light is mellowly spread throughout the room. A large fireplace stands to the left of the south wall, and it contains a small blaze.

Closer to the visitor is the bar. It lines the north wall of the common room. The wall itself is lined with hundreds of beer bottles. Evidently, the proprieter collects these things.

Off to the north (the visitor's right) are halfling-scale hallways and such. (For the record, I put halfling ceilings at five and a half feet high.) To the rear of the room are human-scaled hallways.

There's a halfling woman behind the bar and a human girl waiting tables. At the bar are two ranger-looking fellows laughing with an outdoorsily-attired young woman. Two tables have families of humans at them. At another table are a couple of druids.

Inn

The Hall serves as a center for a small settlement astride the Finagle/Clampdown road in the Eaderoter Forest.

Around the Midwood Hall building are small shops, including a provisioner, a blacksmith, an apothecary/herbalist, an ostler and a leather worker. All these are run by Burrowses. If a need arises which doesn't fall strictly into any of the above categories, they will be happy to improvise.

Menu

The ranger takes a spoonful of soup. He winces, clenches his hands, stomps one foot a few times and then drains his beer mug. This process is repeated with variations until his dishes are empty and he's a bit tipsy.

Drink:

"... Perhaps you could stick around and have a bite? Tonight we have turnip soup with cauliflower noodles, lima bean aspic, zucchini-parsnip pie and fresh-baked okra bread."

No two ways about it -- the vegetarian fare is healthy but horrendous to the tongue.

Happily, there's a huge selection of beers to choose from.

Molokai

Nation

Deathmagic

In Molokai, the central deathpower stations are two immense obelisks, named Draxus and Aldergon. The obelisks are calling the shots for Molokai. They started as structures similar to Vergaantz', but, due to faulty ceremonies at their inception, they were accidentally imbued with egos. These were able to feed on the energy coursing through and strengthen their control over their own destinies.

Draxus (the Bright Tower) is equal to a 25th level cleric and 10th level illusionist.

Aldergon (the Grey Tower) has the powers of a 22nd level magic user and a 7th level druid.

Both towers can project images within their range of power (above and beyond their m.u. and illusionist powers).

Obelisks - Aldergon

Aldergon sometimes manifests itself as an appariton of a beat-up old fighter in beat-up old grey armour.

Obelisks - Draxus

On occasion, Draxus puts in an appearance as a slightly loony young paladin in very shiny plate armour.

This paladin calls himself Billy Threepence and claims to be from rural Klodomuk.

All who die within Molokai who fail a save versus death magic at -9 and whose bodies are above -11 hit points become undead (with full h.p.) and the vast majority (roll wisdom or less on d1000) of these come under direct control of these obelisks. However, most of these undead may not leave Molokai, lest they disintegrate. About half the undead are internal security forces. Most of the rest are clerks, bureaucrats and other forms of slave labor. In case of invasion, the guards will use basic guerilla tactics, since a heavy casualty rate of the enemy within the borders is the optimum scenario for the obelisks. Obelisks have a 1% chance of taking notice of each undead being turned in Molokai.

Obelisks - Turning

Turning an obelisk can be attempted using the same method as turning a pyramid, however an obelisk's control receivers will die, along with the obelisk, after 2d4 days. This is due to the fact that the obelisks are neither used to having a single person controlling them, nor have they had anything controlling them for almost nine centuries.

Moniker's

Sczaaczuhn

Owned by:

Moniker

Staff:

Fenker Treehollow, Lucille, Slauk

This hotel and bar is smack dab in the center of the business district. Most of it is built with humans in mind, but one end of the side commons has a 13' door, a raised ceiling and table to accommodate four stone giant-sized individuals. These are only filled a day or two each fortnight, but they add a certain atmosphere. Moniker, the innkeeper, is a shadowy figure who strives to leave no impression on any he meets. He generally sits at a small table in a dark corner near the bar. Fenker Treehollow is the primary bartender during normal drinking hours. He stands on a shelf that folds out from under the bar, and he is usually talking loudly with the patrons. This also draws attention from Moniker. Others at the bar include Lucille the bargirl and Slauk, who serves as chef and entertainment.
